In the tradition of Jasper Johns, I have taken this iconic symbol and created a metaphoric vision. Unlike Johns, I have not stopped at merely forcing the viewer to see the national symbol through artistic aesthetics. My work rewards engagement, not simply observation. From a distance, the image looks almost dingy--but has a distinct quality of 3-dimensionality--a visual ripple. Upon closer inspection, the dinginess dissolves or resolves into larger and smaller spots of pure color--some with the special glimmer of metallics. I hope the thoughtful viewer will see within this painting a representation of the chaos within the pattern, the individuality within the whole, the brightness within the uncertainty, the shape within the graph.
