MONOGRAM 11" x 14" (sold) On my 50th birthday, my friend, Andy Kopra, gave me a great present. It was an art book, ASIAN TRADITIONS/MODERN EXPRESSIONS, Asian American Artists and Abstraction 1945-1970, edited
by Jeffrey Wechsler. The pages of this volume were real
eye-openers...in so many ways. This painting was the first time that I
consciously tried to create a fusion between my heritage and my art. My
technique requires that I paint the entire surface black...then using a
large brush loaded with solvent, I created a calligraphic "window,"
which I subsequently filled with color.
